My Pregnancy Skincare Routine: How I Keep My Skin Looking It's Best

Pregnancy is a unique journey for every woman, and your skin can go through a lot of changes due to hormonal shifts. This is perfectly normal, and understanding your skin’s needs is crucial. During my pregnancies, I’ve learned that assessing my skin daily and weekly helps me determine what it needs – sometimes hydration, moisture, and peace are all it requires.

My Skin Experience During Pregnancy

In my first pregnancy, I didn’t experience acne, but during my second pregnancy, I did! No two pregnancies are the same, and your skin can react differently each time. When I encountered breakouts, I knew hormones were the culprit, so I allowed my skin to breathe and rode it out. Eventually, my skin became dry again and needed plenty of hydrating and moisturizing ingredients.

My Morning Routine

  1. Cleanse: I start with a gentle cleanser to remove impurities without stripping my skin.
  2. Hydrate: I use a hydrating mist to refresh and prep my skin for the next steps.
  3. Serums: I mix a Vitamin C serum with a hyaluronic acid serum to even out my skin tone and keep my skin plump and hydrated.
  4. Eye Cream: I apply an eye cream to protect and nourish the sensitive area around my eyes.
  5. SPF: I finish off with an SPF 50 sunscreen to prevent pigmentation and protect my skin from UV damage.

My Evening Routine

  1. Cleanse: I cleanse my skin the same way as in the morning.
  2. Hydrate: Instead of serums, I use a hydrating cream to lock in moisture.
  3. Face Oil: Sometimes, I add a couple of drops of face oil and give myself a soothing face massage using my hands or a gua sha tool. This helps stimulate circulation and eliminate stagnant lymph fluid.

Weekly Treatments

  1. Exfoliation: I use a gentle exfoliator to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover.
  2. Hydrating Mask: I apply a hydrating mask to replenish and deeply moisturize my skin.

Focus on Hydration and Prevention

Since we need to be cautious with active ingredients during pregnancy, I focus on maintaining hydrated, moisturized, and protected skin. My goal is preventative care rather than stressing over fine lines and wrinkles.

Body Care Routine

  1. Shower Gel: I use a mild natural shower gel from Korres.
  2. Body Oil: After showering, I apply my Skincare By Mai Revitalizing Body Oil directly on wet or damp skin to lock in moisture.
  3. Body Lotion: In the evening, I use a body lotion from iHerb, which keeps my skin nourished throughout the night.
  4. Dry Brushing: A couple of times a week, I gently dry brush my skin, avoiding my belly and back, to promote circulation and exfoliate dead skin cells.
  5. Body Scrub: Occasionally, I use a mild body scrub made from natural oil, sugar, salt, or coffee grounds to keep my skin smooth and soft.

Additional Tips

  • Avoid Perfumed Skincare: I steer clear of heavily perfumed skincare products or those with a lot of essential oils, especially in the first trimester.
  • Regular Massages: I aim to get a full-body massage every 1-2 months to relax my muscles and reduce water retention. Massages and dry brushing help with lymphatic drainage, which is especially beneficial when I experience swelling in my legs.
