Pregnancy Skincare: What You Need to Know

What Happens to the Skin During Pregnancy?

Pregnancy brings about significant hormonal changes that affect the entire body, including the skin. The increase in hormones like estrogen and progesterone can lead to several changes:

  • Increased Oil Production: Many women experience oilier skin due to the surge in hormones, which can lead to pregnancy acne.
  • Hyperpigmentation: Also known as melasma or the “pregnancy mask,” this condition causes dark patches to appear on the face, especially on the forehead, nose, and cheeks.
  • Stretch Marks: As the body grows and stretches, the skin can develop stretch marks, particularly on the abdomen, breasts, hips, and thighs.
  • Sensitivity: Skin can become more sensitive and reactive during pregnancy, making it prone to redness and irritation.

What Can You Expect to Happen to the Face and Body?

Face:

  • Acne: Increased oil production can lead to breakouts.
  • Dark Spots: Hormonal changes can cause melasma, resulting in dark patches on the skin.
  • Increased Sensitivity: The skin may react more strongly to products and environmental factors.

Body:

  • Stretch Marks: Rapid growth can cause the skin to tear, resulting in stretch marks.
  • Dryness and Itchiness: Skin can become dry and itchy as it stretches.
  • Varicose Veins: Increased blood volume and pressure on veins can lead to varicose veins, particularly in the legs.

How to Prevent Stretch Marks

One of the best ways to prevent stretch marks is to keep the skin well-moisturized and elastic. Using natural skincare products rich in plant oils or butters can make a significant difference.

I developed The Revitalizing Body Oil during my first pregnancy, and it became an essential part of my skincare routine. This oil is packed with nourishing and antioxidant-rich plant oils that help keep the skin elastic and flexible, allowing it to stretch comfortably without leaving stretch marks. I used it every day and didn’t get a single stretch mark, so I highly recommend adding it to your list.

In addition to using a body oil, I also recommend incorporating a cream or lotion to ensure your skin stays hydrated. Look for products that contain hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin. For example, I found a fantastic lotion on iHerb that includes colloidal oat extract. This ingredient is excellent for soothing itchy skin, which is a common issue during pregnancy. Its mild formulation makes it great for kids as well.

Pregnancy Skincare Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s

  • Moisturize with a Body Oil and a Lotion or Cream: This combination helps prevent stretch marks by keeping the skin hydrated and elastic.
  • Wear SPF Every Day: Hyperpigmentation can become more prominent during pregnancy. To prevent or minimize damage, use SPF 50 daily, even if you are indoors.
  • Use a Vitamin C Serum: The antioxidant benefits help even out skin tone and protect against environmental stressors.
  • Use Natural and Gentle Skincare Products: Opt for products free from harsh chemicals and irritants.

Don’ts

  • Avoid Retin-A, Retinol, and Retinyl Palmitate: These ingredients are known to cause potential harm to the fetus.
  • Do Not Use Tazorac and Accutane: Both are linked to severe birth defects.
  • Avoid Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acids: These can be too harsh during pregnancy.
  • Skip Hydroquinone: Known for its skin-lightening properties, it is best avoided due to potential risks.
  • Avoid Aluminum Chloride and Formaldehyde: Both can be harmful and are often found in deodorants and nail polishes.
  • Steer Clear of Chemical Sunscreens: Opt for physical sunscreens instead. Check out my recommendations in here:

Conclusion

By understanding what happens to your skin during this time and taking proactive steps to care for it, you can maintain healthy, glowing skin throughout your pregnancy.
